About

For me bentos are an obsession.  I love the creative aesthetic, health aspects and cost effectiveness.  There are also the environmental pleasures of using a completely Green lunch system.  When my daughter was a baby I worried about finding vegetarian alternatives for school lunches.  Stumbling upon bentos was a eureka moment.  I ran around the house shouting 'bento!' for days in joy at having found the perfect solution.  Since then my love of bentos has continued to grow and the importance of healthy eating has been steadily growing alongside it.

I am a mother and cat owner.  I dance, play harp, weave and read.  I love almost everything about Japan including anime, manga, the food, the clothes and the history.  I am an American of Scots/Irish descent who buys rice in 20 lb bags every few weeks.

Bento Anarchy is the blog where I chronicle the bentos that I make for my daughter and myself.  In the beginning of my bento passion I felt like I was being a rebel by making lunches in boxes.  I named my blog accordingly and still enjoy fomenting food rebellions and leading others to make nutritious lunches in a box.

In the Bento is the extension of my desire to teach others about bentos.  Here I can post information about the classes that I teach.  And also I can gather information on bento classes being taught anywhere in the world!

My top 5 favorite things about bentos are:

1.  I know exactly what goes into our lunches every day.  There are no mystery foods.
2. They are environmentally friendly.  Our lunches are 98% waste-free.
3. Bentos help us exercise portion control, healthy eating and appreciation of the food we eat.
4. It makes my daughter happy, erasing her grumpy morning frowns and making smiles instead.
5. Her cute lunches have encouraged my daughter to try a huge range of foods!
